New Film Explores LGBT Love, Loss, and Family in Rural Tennessee

In his debut film, actor/director Patrick Wang explores the life of an LGBT family in rural Tennessee.  When Joey’s husband Cody passes away suddenly, he enters into a custody battle for their young son with his late partner’s family.  The film will be playing at theaters across the globe, and will be premiering in Chicago this weekend.

At some point in the writing, I noticed that for the particular moments we were looking at in these people’s lives, their conversations didn’t really contain political language or the language of identity. I thought, This is interesting, let’s see how long it stays like this. And it stayed that way through the remainder of the writing. It feels honest to these characters, and in the end I feel it invites much deeper and personal thoughts on these issues from the audience. I can talk about a right or I can take you through the experience of missing that right. The latter is far more interesting to me.
