According to new Canadian census data released on Wednesday, the number of same sex couples tying the knot increased by 42% since 2006. The new census tracks data from 2006 through 2011.
Same sex marriage was legalized across Canada in July 2005 under Canada’s Civil Marriage Act. The Canadian census began tracking same same couples in 2006 and saw an immediate 16% increase in marriage shortly after the law was passed. Five years later, the number of same sex couples continues to grow becoming the fastest group of married couples.
